Wild Wednesday Walks, 8 a.m.

Join a naturalist for a brisk weekly walk and enjoy some heart-healthy exercise as you take in the wonders of the woods. Route lengths will vary from week to week. Migratory Bird Hike, 8 – 10 a.m.

The nesting season is over, but the birds can still be seen at Lake Renwick in Plainfield, IL. Preserves like Lake Renwick supply critical stopover habitat as birds migrate through, and also provide birds that stay in the area with winter homes. Each week could bring exciting, new, and sometimes rare sightings, such as eagles or pelicans. Binoculars, field guides, and good walking shoes are recommended. Aster Walk, 9:30 a.m.
This is a 2.5-hour tour of the Bluff Spring Fen led by an experienced fen volunteer. Asters will be in full bloom, and many other species will have their seed heads out. The trail is not paved, so wear old shoes or boots and long pants. At Bluff Spring Fen Nature Preserve in Elgin, IL. Program is free, but registration is required. Deer Grove Workday, 9 a.m. – noon
Join Deer Grove Preserve to do a variety of restoration work that varies by season. Much of the work consists of cutting invasive shrubs, burning brush piles. They also collect and distribute native seed, pick garlic mustard, and monitor their restoration sites. Deer Grove Forest Preserve in Palatine, IL. Somme Prairie Grove Workday, 9 a.m. – noon
The North Branch Restoration Project is working to restore and manage the few remaining savannas, woodlands, forests, and prairies along the North Branch of the Chicago River in the Cook County Forest Preserves. These areas, once part of a vast wilderness, are now under tremendous pressure from urban development and non-native species. Volunteers remove brush, pull invasive weeds, and plant seed so these natural wild communities can flourish as a permanent part of the metropolitan area. Always dress for the weather and wear sun protection. Bring some water. All ages and abilities welcome. At Somme Prairie Grove in Northbrook, IL. Summer Star Hike, 8:30 – 9:30 p.m.

Learn the stories behind several easy-to-see summer constellations and how to find them in the night sky at Greene Valley Forest Preserve in Naperville, IL. Ages 10 and up; under 18 with an adult. Reservations begin September 6. Call (630) 850-8110 for more information.

Wildflower Walk, 1 – 3 p.m.

Go for a leisurely afternoon walk in a forest preserve setting at Grant Woods in Lake Villa, IL. Along the way, you'll learn to identify some of the lovely wildflowers found in Lake County. Listen to interesting anecdotes as we explore, learning how certain plants were named, or how they were used by Native Americans and pioneers as natural medicines, decoration, or food. Twilight Voyage, 6:30 – 8:30 p.m.

Paddle in the lagoon, listen to the sounds of nature, smell the fresh air. Bring the whole family to enjoy an evening of canoeing and exploring nature in Wheaton, IL. Campfire and S'mores follow our outing. To participate in this program, you must sign the waiver on the registration form. Ryerson Conservation Area Fall Color Hikes, 1 – 2:30 p.m.

Join a naturalist for a walk through the autumn colors at Ryerson Conservation Area in Riverwoods, IL. Explore seasonal changes, including why our trees drop their leaves. Secret Gems: Hidden Places of Liberty Prairie Reserve, 9 a.m. – noon

Hike through an autumn landscape of rolling farm fields, oak woods, wetlands and prairie at Liberty Prairie Reserve in Libertyville, IL. Stop for a picnic snack at a secluded estate and then hike some more. You'll visit some of our properties as well as those of private landowners. Registration is required. Howl at the Moon: Night Stalkers

Explore Lyman Woods at night! Walk the trails listening for the sounds of the woods at night in Downers Grove, IL. Along the way we will watch for what lights up the night sky, whether it is the stars or animal eyes. Learn about the amazing nocturnal animals that live in Lyman Woods! Citizens for Conservation Work Day, 3:30 – 5 p.m.

Join Citizens for Conservation volunteers as they harvest seed by hand from native plants. The seed will be used to restore tallgrass prairies in Barrington, IL. Groups are welcome with advance notice. Meet at the CFC office at 459 W. Highway 22 in Lake Barrington. Look for the white farmhouse across from Good Shepherd Hospital. Thomas Lovejoy Speaking Engagement

Renowned conservation biologist Dr. Thomas Lovejoy will be in Chicago, for a Chicago Wilderness evening speaking engagement at the University of Illinois at Chicago. Dr. Lovejoy will provide insight on the emerging local threat from climate change, the impact of climate change on biodiversity, and the actions individuals and organizations can take. Dr. Lovejoy is president of The H. John Heinz III Center for Science, Economics, and the Environment, and previously served as the Executive Vice President of the World Wildlife Fund–U.S. He coined the term “biological diversity” in 1980, is the author of numerous books, and is the founder of the public television series Nature. The event is open to the public and free of charge.
