![]() Natural Richness & Industrial Power
Historically and ecologically, the Calumet region is at the heart of Chicago Wilderness — with many of the region's finest prairies, savannas, forests, and endangered species habitats sandwiched between mills and neighborhoods. We hope we’ve managed to capture some the essence of the Calumet, to interest you in this simultaneously rough and sensitive, sobering and inspiring place. The Gaylord & Dorothy Donnelley Foundation is proud to sponsor this special issue of Chicago Wilderness on the Calumet region. GDDF’s mission is to support land conservation and artistic vitality for communities in the Chicago region and the Lowcountry of South Carolina. The Calumet’s ecological treasures in both Indiana and Illinois are a specific focus of our work in the Chicago region.
