Dennis Nyberg And Oliver Pergams Win Conservation and Stewardship Awards

In Asheville, North Carolina, on October 4, they'll be singing the praises of Dennis Nyberg. Nyberg — director of the James Woodworth Prairie in Glenview, steward of Cranberry Slough Nature Preserve in southwestern Cook County, and associate professor of biological sciences at the University of Illinois at Chicago — has been awarded the prestigious Natural Areas Stewardship Award for 2002 by the Natural Areas Association (NAA). The award will be presented at the NAA annual meeting.

The award recognizes Nyberg's "contributions to natural areas protection, bringing volunteers to conservation work, establishing a prescribed burn program at the James Woodworth Prairie, and his many achievements in the education arena."

We join the NAA in thanking Dennis for his outstanding work on behalf of Chicago Wilderness' natural wonders.

Oliver Pergams, one of Nyberg's students who recently completed his doctorate, has also been recognized for his work in the region. Pergams was named a David H. Smith fellow in the conservation research program established by The Nature Conservancy, which is devoted exclusively to applied conservation research problems in the United States.
