Chicago Wilderness recently welcomed eight new members to the coalition, bringing the total membership to 143.

The Barrington Area Council of Governments is a collaboration among municipalities within four counties involved in encouraging protection of natural areas, environmentally sensitive development, landscaping and water management, public education and conservation efforts. The Batavia Plain Dirt Gardeners support the Batavia Riverwalk Wildflower Sanctuary and other community projects. The Clarendon Hills Park District promotes sound environmental practices including wise use and protection of air, water, soil and wildlife, wise use of energy resources, the protection and restoration of native communities, and open space planning.

Friends of the Forest Preserves (Cook County) is a volunteer organization that seeks to assist the Forest Preserve District of Cook County in fulfilling its mission of acquiring, protecting and restoring natural lands and educating the public about this outstanding resource. The Portage Park and Recreation Department aims to acquire and conserve natural open spaces, restore oak savanna and sand prairie habitats and convert abandoned railroads into multi-use recreational trails.

The Village of Itasca’s Spring Brook Nature Center works to restore, manage, preserve and interpret its unique resources for the public good and for fostering environmental stewardship. Taltree Arboretum and Gardens is a public arboretum and garden in northwest Indiana that has been involved in prairie conservation and restoration, wetlands restoration, reforestation, a survey of ground nesting birds, eradication of invasives and native plant propagation. The Village of Homer Glen in Will County is committed to preserving, protecting, and enhancing quality of life through responsible residential and economic development and sound fiscal management (See "The Vote for Green Towns," CW, Summer ’01). The Village strives to maintain open space, preserve its unique rural character, and safeguard its natural resources.
