Jim Sweeney Wins National Wetlands Award
Jim Sweeney, a longtime activist who
was instrumental in establishing the Grand Kankakee Marsh
National Wildlife Refuge, was one of seven recipients of
the 2002 National
Wetlands Awards for exemplary contributions to the conservation
and restoration of the nation's wetlands.

The awards program is co-sponsored by
the Environmental Law Institute, U.S. Environmental Protection
Agency, USDA Forest Service, U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service,
National Marine Fisheries Service, and Natural Resources
Conservation Service.
Sweeney, from Indiana, has raised funds,
given talks, written articles, and spearheaded letter campaigns
about the Marsh. Now, as the president of the Griffith Izaak
Walton Conservation Lands, Inc., he has established the
Wetland Watch group, which reports more than thirty violations
of the Clean Water Act each year.
