Jim Sweeney, a longtime activist who was instrumental in establishing the Grand Kankakee Marsh National Wildlife Refuge, was one of seven recipients of the 2002 National Wetlands Awards for exemplary contributions to the conservation and restoration of the nation's wetlands.

The awards program is co-sponsored by the Environmental Law Institute, U.S. Environmental Protection Agency, USDA Forest Service, U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service, National Marine Fisheries Service, and Natural Resources Conservation Service.

Sweeney, from Indiana, has raised funds, given talks, written articles, and spearheaded letter campaigns about the Marsh. Now, as the president of the Griffith Izaak Walton Conservation Lands, Inc., he has established the Wetland Watch group, which reports more than thirty violations of the Clean Water Act each year.
