Help Take Nature's Pulse
The groups listed here are looking for volunteer monitors — both beginners and experts

Butterfly Monitoring Network — June through August. Contact Mel Manner, (847) 464-4426 or manner@foxvalley.net. No experience necessary. Must attend training session.

BCN Nesting Census — June. Contact Lee Ramsey at (847) 501-4683. Familiarity with local nesting bird species required.

Christmas Bird Count — Late December through early January. Beginners paired with experts. Contact your local count-circle coordinator (list available).

Spring Bird Count — First or second weekend in May. No training sessions, beginners paired with experts. Contact Vern Kleen at (217) 787-3515 or kleen@quixnet.net.

Hawk Watch — Late August through early December. Contact Vic Berardi at (847) 680-5281 or VBirdman@aol.com. No experience necessary.

Calling Frogs — March 15 to July 10. Contact Rebecca Blazer, (847) 965-1150. Volunteers must attend training workshop.

Savanna Herps (Amphibians and Reptiles) — March through October. Contact Bob Brodman at (219) 866-6215. This year, will cover Will, Lake (IL), and Jasper (IN) Counties. No experience necessary.

Plant Community Monitoring — April through August. Contact Karen Glennemeier at (847) 965-1150 x12. Skilled plant and tree identifiers needed, but beginners also needed as recorders and field partners.

Dragonfly Monitoring Network — Late April to mid-October. Contact Gareth Blakesley at (773) 755-5100 x3032 or gblakesley@naturemuseum.org. Must attend training and be willing to dedicate time over summer.

Plants of Concern (Rare Plant Monitoring) — April through October. Contact Susanne Masi at (847) 835-8269 or smasi@chicagobotanic.org. Basic knowledge of native flora of northeastern Illinois required. Must attend training session.

RiverWatch — May through June. Contact Pete Jackson at (888) 428-0362 or pjackson@dnrmail.state.il.us. No experience necessary. Must attend training and be interested in a long-term project.

ForestWatch — August to September and April 25 to May 25. Contact Pete Jackson at (888) 428-0362 or pjackson@dnrmail.state.il.us. No experience necessary. Must attend training and be interested in a long-term project.

PrairieWatch — Mid-August through September (for vegetation) and mid-June through July (for butterflies). Contact Pete Jackson at (888) 428-0362 or pjackson@dnrmail.state.il.us. Must attend training and be interested in a long-term project.
